TVS students use an interactive bulletin board in the hall to demonstrate why monarchs aggregate or gather so closely together in the Oyamil fir trees in Mexico. The children have been studying the migration and dormant state of the monarch while they stay in Mexico during the winter months. Why do these butterflies gather so closely together? The students made models of the monarch and numbered each of the 120 butterflies and attached them to a tree, huddled together. We created a rainstorm with colored water and sprayed the butterflies from the east and then the west. Each student measured in cm. how wet their wings got. More than 4 cm. of moisture meant they would die in the night during the freeze.
Students discovered that the butterflies that gathered in the middle had more protection from the moisture. Their conclusion answered the question of why this insect that usually lives it life alone, will now gather together in the winter months in Mexico.

This male monarch was spotted in Fort Worth on Oct. 21. He was collecting nectar to store lipids or fats to make the long journey ahead to Mexico for the winter. The class added his information to journey north which tracks each monarch during migration. ( To determine a male from a female, look for a black dot on a black vein on each of the hind wings)
posteriors)
